Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is a YA novel of 18-year old Lia, who is anorexic. Lia and her best friend Cassie make a pact to be the skinniest girls in school. As you can imagine, the girls end up with eating disorders. Cassie is bulimic and Lia anorexic. After Cassie dies, Lia seems to be thrown even further off course and seems to be drifting futher and further away from her family.
At first the style of the book seemed strange to me but I'm sure it will appeal to the YA crowd. The cover of the book is beautiful and really manages to capture the consept of "wintergirls".
The book is quite distressing because the reader really gets into Lia's mind. At the same time it is very insightful into what a person with an eating disorder is going through. A must-read for all teenagers who feel out of place and also for all mothers who have teenage daughters!
